Google’s Penguin Update 2.0: Loser analysis

The good news first. The data in Searchmetrics Suite and Essentials is fully updated providing the most current and accurate information. We usually do updates from Saturday to Sunday, but because of Google Penguin update 2.0, we did it today.

Yesterday night, May 22nd, Google finished rolling out the second generation of its Penguin updates. Looking back at the first release of the algorithm in April 2012, the focus was primarily around webspam. Since then, there have been only iterations; with the bases being more like “data refreshes” as seen in the most recent update in October 2012. Now with Google Penguin update 2.0, the update is specific to the search algorithm of Google – and this time the impact will only affect around 2.3% of English queries, a decrease in comparison to the first generation of webspam (3.1%).

The update not only affects the U.S. or English-speaking countries, but is fully rolled out globally for other languages as noted yesterday in Matt Cutts blog:

“The change has also finished rolling out for other languages world-wide. The scope of Penguin varies by language, e.g. languages with more webspam will see more impact.”

This is surprisingly early. Especially because Cutts, who is the Head of the Google webspam team announced another attack on link farms, Over-Optimization, “Black Hat” and keyword stuffing in a recent video scheduled to release over the coming summer. It seems that Penguin 2.0 will just be the beginning as made known in the video announcement:

“We’re relatively close to deploying the next generation of Penguin, […] Internally we call it ‘Penguin 2.0’, …and again, Penguin is a webspam change that’s dedicated to try to find black hat webspam, and try to target and address that.”

It’s only been ten days since the announcement on May 13th of what to expect in the coming months and they have already rolled out 2.0 – ending the life of several pages with bad links. Cutts has stressed that the impact of the second-generation webspam update will have a much deeper and greater influence this time around.

“So this one is a little more comprehensive than Penguin 1.0, and we expect it to go a little bit deeper in have a little bit more of an impact.”

After the first update we did a deep dive analysis into the impact Penguin 1.0 had in a posting called “Bad SEO” Update. In a similar fashion, we have analyzed our data for an in-depth look at understanding the impact of Penguin 2.0.

Who are the top losers from the Penguin 2.0 update? Our analysis uncovered whose SEO Visibility was seriously impacted, with sites like cheapoair.com, dish.com and the salvationarmy.com:

Conclusion

It’s not the update I was expecting. I thought that this Googles Penguin update would have had a bigger impact similar to Panda 1. But that didn’t happen. My first analysis shows that many thin sites, sites with thin links and especially untrusted links face the problem. In addition, some small business sites were hit because they haven’t taken SEO serious enough. Google itself confirmed that the impact wouldn’t be as high as many thought – maybe this is just the calm before the storm and the big update is really coming in the future. We will see.     Can you confirm what countries the data’s been refreshed for please? GB’s data looks the same as the data that was released yesterday (which already had today’s date on it). As it stands, the GB data’s definitely not showing some of the big changes I’ve noticed for some sites today.

    Quick question about SM in general, do you always update on Sat/Sun? When looking at Google UK, SEO visibility always shows an update takes place on a Thursday, please can you clarify when your UK data is updated?

    We update once a week, UK data Thursday, so update data is not yet in it.

    Usually we doo US on the weekend, but today pulled fresh data to see the impact of penguin.

    Maybe, not sure yet, we will update UK sooner. This is not so easy done..

    Usually if we import the data on Thursday (e.g. UK) it is from Wednesday. The preprocessing and import takes a while. But because of the update you get some fresher data tomorrow afternoon for the UK index.

  • I have a client that’s been hit in UK but not showing as hit on Search Metrics. Good to know you’ll be updating tomorrow. Will also let us see prove or disprove that Penguin takes a day or two to fully roll out.

  • Just noticed, on the Germany charts I’m seeing 26th May as the latest date. Erm, that’s this Sunday?

  • Jon, the date is the default import date. Because we import the data usually at the same date we have to make it easy for the user on update day every week. Because of Penguin 2.0 we pushed the update up.

    The UK update day is always Thursday. The data mostly from Wednesday because of preprocessing and time for import. For our UK clients we will make a special update with fresher data tomorrow afternoon.

  • Nice Analysis, it is interesting too see that adult content websites were easily the biggest losers. Will be good to test this in a week after things settle a bit =)

    Hey @marcus,

    Seems like the data you are listing in the blog post is not the same as when looking at the research data for US as it stands right now?

    For me it seems quite obvious that porn sites where hit hard. Some loosing over 90% of their visibility.

    When digging deeper into the development of the SEO visibility for some of the hit sites, it seems as if they have come from nowhere only a few weeks ago and claimed quite a big score on SEO visibility, and that they now have been demoted again. (look at lairporn.com for example)

    Maybe there is more going on then just the Penguin 2.0 update?

  • Quite a few of these sites don’t really seem like losers – Ets.org had a massive spike in visibility last week, and this week it has levelled out to what it was the week before. The same seems to have happened to The Salvation Army.

  • If any website hit by Penguin 2.0 then what should they do and how they recover from penguin 2.0 algorithm??

  • Thank God one of my dormant sites has risen from Google’s abyss and none of the sites I am working has hit hard by the Penguin 2.0.

  • We were hit by Google penguin 2.0 because few months ago some SEO agency called us and offered to do SEO for our company but unfortunately after 4 months, we found out that they are doing massive non quality or related business link building. On 22nd May 2013, our ranking suddenly dropped and disappear. We would like to check with the expert, does anyone know how to recover? We got a big team of employees to support and we are very stress over this. And also is there anyway we can sue that SEO company for using blackhat tactic?
